How to Rank in AEO and GEO
Showing up in AI answers comes from the same foundation as SEO plus answer-first structure. Here is the practical path to being cited by AI search and answer engines.

TL;DR
Ranking in AI answers comes from the same foundation as good SEO, plus answer-first structure. Rank organically first, answer questions directly and early, use clear headings and accurate schema, strengthen your entity and E-E-A-T signals, and measure in Search Console. There is no trick, just the fundamentals applied to being the cited answer.
AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are about being the answer that AI search and assistants surface and cite, not just a blue link. The encouraging part: the path is not a separate set of hacks. It is the same foundation that wins traditional search, focused on being quotable.
For the definitions and how these relate, see what is answer engine optimization and AEO vs SEO vs GEO. This piece is the how-to.
Start with the foundation
AI answers lean heavily on pages that already rank in organic search. If you do not rank for a query, you are unlikely to be cited for it. So solid technical SEO, a fast crawlable site, and content that earns rankings is the entry ticket, not an alternative to AEO. The two reinforce each other.
Answer the question directly
Pages that state the answer plainly and early are far easier for an AI to extract and quote. Lead with the answer, then support it with detail. Use clear, descriptive headings that mirror how people ask, and structure content so a specific answer is easy to lift out. Burying the answer under preamble makes a page hard to cite.
Strengthen entities and add schema
Answer engines work from structured understanding. Accurate schema, FAQ markup that reflects visible content, and clear, consistent entities (who you are, what you do) all make you easier to understand and trust. Schema must match what is actually on the page, never fabricated. More on this in schema markup for AEO and entity SEO for AI search.
Build authority and proof
AI answers favor sources they can trust: clear authorship and expertise, real proof, consistent information across the web, and a track record on the topic. Thin, anonymous content is easy to skip. Strengthening your expertise and proof improves both rankings and citation odds.
Measure and refine
Track question-style queries, impressions, and position in Search Console, and manually check the AI engines for the questions you want to win. Double down on what is gaining traction. This is the loop behind my AEO services and the broader SEO, AEO, and GEO program.
