What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is how you get cited by AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and voice assistants. Here is what AEO is, how it differs from SEO, and what actually works.

TL;DR
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your content surfaced and cited by AI answers, like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and voice assistants, rather than only ranking in the blue links. It is built on the same foundation as good SEO: crawlable, well-structured content, clear entities, accurate schema, and real expertise. AEO complements SEO, it does not replace it.
Search is shifting from a list of links to direct answers. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and voice assistants increasingly answer the question on the spot, often citing a handful of sources. Answer engine optimization is how you become one of those cited sources.
What AEO actually means
AEO is optimizing so machines can understand, trust, and quote your content as the answer to a question. That means content structured around real questions, clear and consistent entities (who you are, what you do), accurate schema, and demonstrable expertise. It overlaps heavily with SEO but shifts the goal from ranking a page to being the cited answer.
Why it matters now
When an AI answer sits above the results, fewer people scroll to the classic links. If you are not in the answer, you can lose visibility even while technically ranking. Businesses that build AEO foundations now are positioning for how discovery increasingly works, rather than reacting later.
What actually works
- Answer questions directly and early on the page, then support with detail.
- Structure content with clear, descriptive headings that mirror how people ask.
- Add accurate schema, including FAQ and entity markup that reflects visible content.
- Strengthen entity signals: a clear About page, consistent details, and internal links.
- Demonstrate real expertise and proof, which answer engines increasingly weigh.
This is the foundation behind my AEO services in Dallas and the broader SEO, AEO, and GEO program. For tooling and measurement, see choosing an AI platform and using Search Console data for AEO.
What does not work
AEO is not a bag of tricks. Keyword-stuffed pages, fake schema that does not match visible content, and mass-generated thin articles all age badly and are exactly what Google's guidance and answer engines penalize. The durable approach is the same one that has always won: genuinely helpful, well-structured, trustworthy content.
