AEO vs SEO vs GEO: What's the Difference?
SEO, AEO, and GEO get used interchangeably, but they target different things. Here is a clear breakdown of each and how they fit together in a modern search strategy.

TL;DR
SEO optimizes to rank in search results. AEO optimizes to be the direct answer in AI Overviews, chatbots, and voice. GEO (generative engine optimization) optimizes to be referenced inside generative AI outputs. They share one foundation, so you do not pick one. You build the foundation well and the three reinforce each other.
SEO, AEO, and GEO are thrown around as if they are competing strategies. They are not. They are three lenses on the same goal, getting found, and they share most of their foundation. Here is the clean version of how they differ and fit together.
SEO: ranking in results
Search engine optimization is the established discipline: earn rankings in the search results through technical health, relevant content, authority, and good user experience. It is still the backbone, because most of what helps AEO and GEO starts as good SEO.
AEO: being the answer
Answer engine optimization targets the direct answer, in Google AI Overviews, chatbots, and voice assistants. It emphasizes answering questions directly, clear structure, accurate schema, and strong entity and trust signals. The deeper version is in what is answer engine optimization.
GEO: being referenced by generative AI
Generative engine optimization focuses on being represented and referenced inside generative AI outputs, where models synthesize answers from many sources. It leans on the same fundamentals plus consistent, well-structured, trustworthy information about your entity across the web, so models associate the right facts with you.
How they fit together
The key insight is that they are not separate projects. A clean, fast, crawlable site with helpful content, accurate schema, strong entities, and real proof serves all three at once. You do not choose SEO or AEO or GEO; you build the shared foundation and tune for each. That is exactly how my SEO, AEO, and GEO service is structured, with a Dallas-focused entry point at AEO services.
