A content roadmap is the higher-level plan that ties your content to where the business is trying to go. A calendar tells you what publishes next Tuesday. A roadmap tells you why, and what it is building toward over the next quarter or two.
What goes into a roadmap
- The business goals the content is meant to support.
- The main themes or pillars you will build authority around.
- Priority order, usually by a mix of impact and how realistic it is to rank.
- Rough timing, so the calendar has something to draw from.
I think of the roadmap as the strategy and the calendar as the execution. You really want both. Skipping the roadmap is how sites end up with a pile of unrelated posts and no momentum.
